WHAT IS STATIC CHARGE?
Static charge is the buildup of charge between two insulative surfaces. It arises when surfaces rub together and this results in an excess of electrons on one surface and a deficiency on the other. The surfaces on which the charge builds up will remain in place unless it has a path through which it can flow. As there is often no real path through which the charge can flow the resultant voltage may remain in place for some time and this gives rise to the term “static electricity”.
WHAT ARE EFFECTS OF STATIC ELECTRICITY IN INDUSTRIAL ENVIRONMENT?
In sensitive electronics manufacturing, electronics components subassemblies and assemblies, prevention of static electricity is based on an Electrostatic Protected Area (EPA).
The EPA can be a small workstation or a large manufacturing area.
The main principle of an EPA is that there are no highly-charging materials in the vicinity of ESD sensitive electronics, all conductive materials are grounded, workers are grounded, and charge build-up on ESD sensitive electronics is prevented.
